Staying Warm in Winter

Bitter cold temperatures. Icy winds. Blowing snow. Winter has many ways of exposing you to the cold. But just because the winter weather is cold, doesn't mean you have to be. When the mercury drops, Mr. Goodair advises you try these tips — they'll keep you toasty and warm.

LAYER UP



While this might be an obvious tip, layering your clothes works the best. Wear quite a lot of thin layers because then you can trap the air in between the layers. It also means layers of clothing can be removed once someone is warmed up. The real key to handling the cold is layers of clothing — scarf, hat, gloves, jumper, coats, etc. Always make sure you have a back-up coat at work for any extra layer required.  

COVER UP

Any part of the body which is exposed will feel the chill, which means the hands and ears often feel the coldest. The back of the neck and lower back are the parts that are susceptible to the cold, and it is recommended that we cover those to feel warmer.    

WARMING THE HOUSE

Again, this is quite simple. Use heaters, fireplaces, air conditioning set to warm temperatures. Close curtains and blinds to minimize the cold seeping in through the windows, and make sure windows and doors are closed and shut.  

STAY HYDRATED

While you wouldn't think it, dehydration is a real concern during cold weather. Not only does cold air strip our bodies of moisture because it is drier, but winter winds carry moisture away from the skin's surface through the process of evaporation. What's more, people don't naturally feel as thirsty in winter as they do when the weather is hot. Drink plenty of water and hot drinks (which offer both hydration and warmth), even if you don't feel thirsty. This will help you stay well hydrated, which makes it easier for you to stay warm.  

KEEP MOVING

The more active you are in cold weather, the more heat your body will generate as a result. If you do plan to sit or stand outside for long periods of time, wiggle your hands and toes every few minutes to keep the blood (and therefore, heat) circulating in these extremities.  

HAVE A HOT DRINK

More a quick fix than a warming strategy, drinking a hot drink will warm up the body for a little while.



So sit down, rug up and enjoy a hot beverage by the fire this winter; its going to be a cold one!
